Subject(s): Indiana

'Mongst the hills of Indiana
Where but Nature has her way,
And the vision of her grandeur
Melts our troubles all away,
There is quiet, peace, and beauty
That would cure us of our ills --
If we'd go out in the morning
'Mongst those Indiana hills!

There through haze of early morning
With the quiet that it knows
Comes the dawn so young and tender
Where the straggling brooklet flows;
But we get a clearer vision
Of the new day, peaceful, fair,
O'er the hills and through the valleys
When the mists begin to clear.

Cabins dotted o'er the landscape
Send their threads of smoke on high
As a tiny silver ribbon
Reaching up to meet the sky,
And the bobwhite in the valley
Gives a call that through me thrills,
As his mate will answer clearly
O'er those Indiana hills!

Not a trace of noise or bustle
From the city's glare and din
Penetrates this peace and quiet
Nor may hope to enter in.
Nature takes my hand and leads me
Up and down o'er rocks and rills,
Where the land is filled with beauties
'Mongst those Indiana hills!
