TO 'AN AMIABLE CHILD', by MABEL N. LAWSON First Line: In the shadow of a tomb Last Line: By a smile upon his face. Subject(s): Innocence | ||||||||
In the shadow of a tomb Where in homage men have filed, Under sod is one at rest Called "An Amiable Child." Voices hushed, in solemn mien, Mortals guard a nation's shrine, But the boy is sentineled In the whispering trees' confine. In his grill-enclosured grave Lies sweet innocence at rest, In the marbled sepulchre Is reposed a medalled breast. And though manhood brought the man To a death-defying fame, Yet how good it is to know That the lad is free from blame. Stern, the General's glory rode, Borne upon a nation's grace, But the gentle child won fame By a smile upon his face. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HORATIAN VIRTUE by ANTHONY HECHT MONOLOGUE BEFORE AN INNOCENT BEING PRISONED IN A TREE by MARY KINZIE THE EROTIC PHILOSOPHERS by KIZER.
