PAUSE, by ANNE STANTON LAY First Line: Today the hours are nuns, soft-shod, grey-clad Last Line: Time pauses, listening for a sharp cold word. Subject(s): Memory; Summer | ||||||||
Today the hours are nuns, soft-shod, grey-clad In morning fog and noon's dull silver fleece Of cloud. They pass in meditative peace Though autumn's dressed in gold and crimson plaid, And all the fruits and flowers summer had Bloom clear in memory. Joy finds release In contemplation of renewed increase Of wealth. Time pauses that we may be glad Remembering hours that marched with daffodils, Ripened with berries, bronzed with summer sun, Shuttled the air with song and wing of bird, Blew clover scent and rose breath over hills, Taught sun-flecked waves to frolic -- summer done, Time pauses, listening for a sharp cold word. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE ADVANCE OF SUMMER by MARY KINZIE THE SUMMER IMAGE by LEONIE ADAMS CANOEBIAL BLISS by JOSEPH ASHBY-STERRY THE END OF SUMMER by HENRY MEADE BLAND THE FARMER'S BOY: SUMMER by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD SONNET: 14.
