FAITH, by MILDRED BENTLEY LEE First Line: Autumn, - and the trees are stripped Last Line: Oh faithless heart, why weep? Why weep? Subject(s): Autumn; Faith; Seasons; Fall; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
Autumn, -- and the trees are stripped Of summer vestments proudly borne; Autumn, and the earth, still-lipped, Regards her garments, stained and torn. Naked the trees against the sky, Braced to the bitter winds that blow; With gnarled branches lifted high They wait the winter's gift of snow. Thus, in the Autumn of my years, Facing with certainty the cold Of chilling age, my life appears But an old story, newly told. Winter, and death; but somewhere, soon, I shall know spring, and rouse from sleep, I too shall know some lovelier June; Oh faithless heart, why weep?
