LOVE'S DELAY, by EDWARD CRACROFT LEFROY Poet's Biography First Line: They sat - they two - upon the cliff together Last Line: Still pledged to move, and still love-anchored there. Subject(s): Love; Togetherness | ||||||||
THEY sat they two upon the cliff together, And watched the moonlight dance along the swell, Till broke upon their pleasance, 'mid the heather, The midnight warning of the village bell. "Good-night, my love," he said; "we pass the measure Of blessing which in one day's lap can lie; To linger later were to weary Pleasure, And draw some brightness from To-morrow's eye." They rose, and gave a last fond look at ocean, And then another, and again one more, And lingering thus, at every homeward motion They noted some delight unseen before. So waned the Night; and when young Morn upstarted And quenched pale Luna's lamp with ruddier glare, He found them parting yet, and yet unparted, Still pledged to move, and still love-anchored there. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A WOMAN WITH FLAXEN HAIR IN NORFOLK HEARD by ROBERT KELLY YESTERDAY FROM MY FEVER by GALWAY KINNELL IF YOU COULD COME SOFTLY by AUDRE LORDE MISGIVINGS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS NOW THAT YOU'RE HERE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS SILENT IN THE MOONLIGHT by ROBERT BLY A CRICKET BOWLER by EDWARD CRACROFT LEFROY |
