THE INFERNAL FEMININE, by BAIRD LEONARD First Line: Ever since the days of adam Last Line: Is, and shall be till the end. Subject(s): Women; Women's Rights; Feminism | ||||||||
Ever since the days of Adam, (That was quite some time ago) Clergymen have muttered, "Madam, Be your actions thus and so. Put yourself beyond the critics, Have your skirts a proper length; Men are moral paralytics, Do not tax them past their strength!" Even in the Middle Ages, Which were somewhat laissez faire, Women were informed by sages How to act and what to wear. An assembly of ascetics, Eloquent on woman's place, Never fails to link cosmetics With the future of the race. When sweet Julia goes in satins Modestly designed and cut, There are always Dr. Stratons Ready with a curt "Tut! tut!" -- On a damsel meanly pinning Something which they reprehend; So it was in the beginning, Is, and shall be till the end. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD HEMATITE HEIRLOOM LIVES ON (MAYBE DECEMBER 1980) by ALICE NOTLEY ON THE BEACH by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA FEMINIST POEM NUMBER ONE by ELIZABETH ALEXANDER HYPOCRITE SWIFT by LOUISE BOGAN FOR A GODCHILD, REGINA, ON THE OCCASION OF HER FIRST LOVE by TOI DERRICOTTE HESTER'S SONG by TOI DERRICOTTE |
