Hot, tired, and thirsty, burnt by a strong sun,
I turn into the inn I call my own.
Upon the wall I hang my cap and gun,
the water-pail my dog leaves dry as bone.
Bright falls the evening-glow athwart a tun,
where the young widow stands, as though of stone,
and sad,—her fleeting smile a furtive one;
soon the guests' going leaves us there alone.
