Across the restless waters of the Bay
I watch the distant skyline, traced on gold,
Fade into dusk. Night's curtain, dim and cold,
Blots from my view the flashing, wind-whipped spray,
The dank sea-wall, the buildings, stately, gray:
On narrow, cobbled streets the lights unfold,
Until the city, shadowy and old,
Flaunts glittering jewels unseen by eyes of day.
The Chesapeake, rough in the evening breeze,
Whose darkening tide tolls slow the buoy-bell,
Whispers of gallant deeds which cling about
This spot, rich in historic memories.
Let not life's clamorous race break this strange spell.
Leave her in vanished glory, proud, devout.
