When the angry billows roll,
Sorrows overwhelm my soul;
When my heart is sore afraid,
Jesus, in compassion aid!

When no comforter is night,
None on whom I may rely;
When in anguish I have prayed,
Jesus, in compassion aid!

When I faint in dire distress --
Tempted in the wilderness;
Ere the heavenly vision fade,
Jesus, in compassion aid!

When I stand on Jordan's brink --
Severed every earthly link;
Let my trust on Thee be stayed,
Jesus, in compassion aid!
