MAGIC, by LOUISE LOUIS First Line: A feeble glow springs from the tallow Last Line: "finds wings!" Subject(s): Life; Magic; Prayer | ||||||||
"A feeble glow springs from the tallow Stick. And from the hushed and shadowed Room, the world recedes a little . . . More . . . and more. Until out of webbed Corners of a confused brain, a slender Prayer is born! A wordless thing. Scarce stronger than a half-heard Whisper of a child, who reaches for its mother In the dark. It wavers with the candle's Struggling glow as if it dare not hope For life. But suddenly a fairy finger Holds the flame erect. And somehow Just about to wander out -- a timid prayer Finds wings!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN LISTEN, LORD: A PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON A PRAYER FOR THE FUTURE by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRAY by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE PRAYER DURING A TIME MY SON IS HAVING SEIZURES by SHARON OLDS WE WHO PRAYED AND WEPT by WENDELL BERRY |
