WHEN DADDY'S SHIP COMES IN, by RUTH ALBERTA MACARTHUR First Line: O daddy, can I have a bike' Last Line: "if we have faith in dad." Subject(s): Ships & Shipping | ||||||||
"O Daddy, can I have a bike, A bat and ball that I can strike, And all the other things I'd like? My toys are torn and old." My Daddy answered with a grin, "Why, sure, my son, when my ship comes in, If a good boy each day you've been -- You're worth your weight in gold." "Oh, do you mean," I cried in glee, "A ship will bring these things to me? And can you tell how long 'twill be Before your ship comes in?" "Just ask your mother, little man: If anyone can tell, she can." Then whistling off my Daddy ran, His face still all a-grin. My mother looked up wistfully, "Sometimes these ships are long at sea; Sometimes --" she paused and smiled at me -- "They don't come in, my lad. But I am sure our Daddy's ship Will dock some day from its long trip, And treasures from its decks will slip -- If we have faith in Dad." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW THE SHIP POUNDING by DONALD HALL ULTRAISTA ONEIRIC by ANSELM HOLLO THE NORTH SHIP by PHILIP LARKIN GOOD SHIPS by JOHN CROWE RANSOM |
