THE FATAL ROSE, by LILLIAN MACK First Line: In a fairy-like bower / I found a sweet flower Last Line: My rose was a passionate love! Subject(s): Beauty | ||||||||
In a fairy-like bower I found a sweet flower, The queen of that beautiful dell; Her beauty how rare Enchantingly fair, No poet or painter can tell. With a passionate soul I could not control, I stealthily bore her away; Then close to my breast Her sweet form I prest, Nor dreams she could ever decay! Ah! bright were the beams Of life's summer dreams That enchantingly played on my brow; For beauty so rare, So divine I declare, Had a magical, mystical pow'r! But a bleak wint'ry blast O'ertook me at last, And it chilled the sweet rose on my heart, It withered -- it died; And all life beside Seemed then from the world to depart! Ah! tearfully now I seek for my flow'r, But her fragrance and beauty have fled; And naught can I see Of the sweet used-to-be, But a sharp deadly thorn in its stead! What mystery this That robs me my bliss? Give answer, O heavens above! In the lull of the storm I pluck out that thorn -- My rose was a passionate love! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN DIVINELY SUPERFLUOUS BEAUTY by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE BEAUTY OF THINGS by ROBINSON JEFFERS HOPE IS NOT FOR THE WISE by ROBINSON JEFFERS LIFE FROM THE LIFELESS by ROBINSON JEFFERS REARMAMENT by ROBINSON JEFFERS SHANE ONEILLS CAIRN by ROBINSON JEFFERS |
