SONNET TO NIGHT, by LOIS MAHAVIER First Line: Night is earth's conscience; when her sombre veil Last Line: That conscience need no longer tribute pay! Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
Night is earth's conscience; when her sombre veil Descends in velvet folds o'er dale and hill, And day's discordant tasks no more assail The weary soul, it seeks oblivion's fill. Then phantoms dark, from half-forgotten years, Come trooping forward with malignant mirth, To mock at heights attained, with taunting leers, And sit in hallow judgment on their birth. Old wounds and scars renew their pregnant pain, And gain afresh in anguish as they bleed From secret founts, that seek achievement's aim; The well-springs perish in ignoble deed. Oh Night! Draw back thy veil that hides the day, That conscience need no longer tribute pay! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN |
