CLANDESTINE LOVE, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: Two poplars rose for years
Last Line: Their roots embraced.
Subject(s): Drought

Two poplars rose for years,
Slim and proud, on each side
Of an old stone wall.
Their arms lifted to the sky.
They looked conventionally
Impersonal,
Last summer --
The drouth killed them.
Today they were uprooted.

Under the dividing wall
Their roots embraced.
