THALATTA, THALATTA!, by VIRGIL MARKHAM First Line: The march wore on; vigor had ceased to be Last Line: Some silver gleam that speaks to me of home! Subject(s): Home; Sea; Ocean | ||||||||
The march wore on; vigor had ceased to be. Heartsick, the Greeks had reached the last extreme, But kept the will that made that march supreme, Searching the desert for the Euxine key.... Then springing into lifetheir hopes set free All voices chorused in one joyous theme: Hark, from the host in one terrestrial stream, The cry ten-thousand tongued, "The sea! The sea!" So when I leave the circle of this sky, These earthly roads, and suddenly shall gaze Out on the wonder of immortal ways, Oh, may I see, with greatening heart and high, A jocund pinnacle or shining dome Some silver gleam that speaks to me of home! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE FIGUREHEAD by LEONIE ADAMS TO RICHARD MANSFIELD, 2ND by VIRGIL MARKHAM |
