MIRROR LAKE, by
First Line: What do the tourists say? I asked our guide
Last Line: I held my breath, lest I might break the spell.
Subject(s): Lakes; Tourists; Pools; Ponds

"What do the tourists say?" I asked our guide
When entering the great Yosemite.
"Do most of them, enthralled, quote poetry?
His old eyes twinkled, while he turned to hide

His smiling lips, but finally replied
(Albeit ever so reluctantly
As if he knew that I would not agree
Or understand, yet he was loathe to chide:)

"Well, lady, them as likes it best of all
Says -- nothin'!" On we rode, without a word,
Save my disgusted comment: "How absurd."
But when, beside that loveliest lake of all
I gazed upon the scenes he knew so well,
I held my breath, lest I might break the spell.
