BUT WHEN I SAW GRAND CANYON, by
First Line: The painted desert taught my soul to sing
Last Line: And majesty, and silence like a prayer.
Subject(s): Deserts; Food & Eating; Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Painted Desert taught my soul to sing,
But when I saw Grand Canyon I was mute,
Stilled by this vast, this dread, imponderable thing,
As a sudden stricken lark, or unstrung lute.

To speak profaning word, I did not dare,
The Great White Spirit, He, Himself, was there,
And majesty, and silence like a prayer.
