DEAF TO LAUGHTER, by
First Line: Say this of beauty, she was yours and mine
Last Line: Beauty sprang from rapture an hour ago.
Subject(s): Beauty

Say this of Beauty, she was yours and mine,
Clothed in garments stitched in mist and dew,
Wrapped in a cloud of magic whose design
Was stippled moonlight draped with a star or two.

No one could lead her far enough away,
That she would not come back to close our eyes
To anything save loveliness. True, they say
She's ruthless, heartless, most of all, unwise.
Let us refuse to counsel with such a one,
Blind to her beckoning, deaf to her tread,
Deaf to laughter whose sound is never done,
Numb to moondrenched shadows on a bed.

Impregnable to prattle, we should know,
Beauty sprang from rapture an hour ago.
