SIGNUM CUI CONTRADICETUR, by
First Line: Long months he lay within the womb
Last Line: Who was the life.
Alternate Author Name(s): Stackhouse, Mary Agnes
Subject(s): Jesus Christ

Long months He lay within the womb,
Prisoned from every lovely sight,
Wrapped round in darkness and in gloom,
Who was the Light.

In a rude stable cold and dim,
Maid Mary our Redeemer bore;
All doors were harshly closed on Him,
Who was the Door.

Long time by silence did He teach,
A helpless Infant, ere was heard
His first quaint, stammering baby speech,
Who was the Word.

Three anguished days they strove to trace
His childish footsteps gone astray.
Lost, in the crowded, alien place!
Who was the Way.

Meekly He did His parents' will;
They gave commands, with secret awe,
And He was subject to them still,
Who was the Law.

With wounded hands and feet and side,
All mangled from the cruel strife,
He bowed His head and, shuddering died,
Who was the Life.
