A rose-set cloud had kiss'd her cheek, The gold-set sun had kiss'd her head; Her wings were stroked by the pale twilight, The mart below was silenced. It chanced thereby an angel sped, Belated in the coming night, Who marvel'd at her forehead white, And marvel'd at her lips rose-red, And long'd to cherish her golden, head, And look'd, and long'd, and lingered. And, thirsting at so tasty sight, Came nigh and touch'd her bosom-bed -- And shriek'd and started with affright, And upward, upward, sped and sped, For the carven angel was cold as the dead. And the bar of heaven closes at night. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN A COURT-MINSTREL by THEOPHILE JULIUS HENRY MARZIALS |
