DARK SAILORS, by BEULAH MAY First Line: Dark sailors lurch through alleys of the town Last Line: Where no voice echoes and no white gull flies. Subject(s): Sailing & Sailors | ||||||||
Dark sailors lurch through alleys of the town, Leaving behind a breath of clove, the feel Of winds from tropic islands when the keel Plows through the foaming surf. Their hands are brown And curved from oars and letting anchors down, Chilled by quick albicore and gracile eel Writhing upon their hooks, the clash of steel, And icy waters where a man's hopes drown. Dark sailors laugh, sitting before an inn, Drinking hot liquor -- yet anon their eyes Gaze strange and cold above a cannakin, And they fall silent, seeing with surprize, A bitter headland, frore and chill as sin, Where no voice echoes and no white gull flies. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...EASTERN LONG ISLAND by MARVIN BELL SAILS OF MURMUR by ANSELM HOLLO LOST ABOARD U.S.S.
