The mild Madonna has her shrine Within the gate-tower wall Where goes the traffic of the town. She hears their footsteps fall: The good folk going in to mass; The patient gray-eared mules Loaded with beets and cabbages; The cart of wine that cools The city's throat; men and a dog; White oxen hauling hay; Young girls with baskets filled with grapes; Fat ducks for market day; Brown fishers trailing dripping nets; Old women in the sun -- She lifts her small Bambino up To bless them every one. | Discover our poem explanations - click here!Other Poems of Interest...MARY, THE MOTHER OF JESUS by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) MADONNA by KATHARINE LEE BATES BALLADE TO OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA by HILAIRE BELLOC OUR LORD AND OUR LADY by HILAIRE BELLOC PLASTIC BEATITUDE by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR A SONG OF MARY by LUCILLE CLIFTON ISLAND MARY by LUCILLE CLIFTON MARY'S DREAM by LUCILLE CLIFTON |
