MOON SHADOW (AN ECLIPSE PICTURE), by LILIAN C. B. MCA. MAYER First Line: I was on the high hill Last Line: And earth cannot answer. Subject(s): Eclipses | ||||||||
I was on the high hill When the Moon Shadow swept over me, Grey upon violet, grey upon black. What was this phantom shape, Whence this dread visitant, Other-world spectre? Shadow of a great cosmic wing Closing about me, Cool, fold on fold. The Shadow touches the hill. From the grey-black my eyes pierce All the marvel between me and the skies. A black body floats In the arm of a jeweled crescent; And between the jewels, luminous, ghostly, White fires of the Cosmos -- Light from the valleys of the Moon. But now on the instant What glory outflashing, What long wings of pearl, What red banners streaming? What is this dream-world, What Truth is it bringing? But the shadow is gone, And earth cannot answer. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT by JOHN HOLLANDER THE LIGHTS IN THE SKY ARE STARS: BLOOD ON A DEAD WORLD by KENNETH REXROTH SEEING THE ECLIPSE IN MAINE by ROBERT BLY AT A LUNAR ECLIPSE by THOMAS HARDY THE DAVENPORT LUNAR ECLIPSE by JAMES HARRISON ON AN ECLIPSE OF THE MOON by WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR IN AN ECLIPSE by GRACE DENIO LITCHFIELD GREY GHOSTS by LILIAN C.
