NO NEED OF THINGS, by ALICE TROXWELL MCCOUN First Line: Why cling to things? When everywhere a vast Last Line: That we may soar aloft, exalting him. Subject(s): Love; Materialism; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
Why cling to things? When everywhere a vast Supply of noble thoughts, a wealth untold, Awaits our instant use. Great truths unfold Their purity to those who pray and fast. Why cling to things? When into thought is cast The priceless pearl of healing Love, we hold As naught the waves of sin that fain would mold Imperfect forms at which we stand aghast. More love is our deep need. Why hold to things, Mere misty shadows of a vision dim? Full well He knows we need a heart that sings Of praise and joy to join with seraphim: No need of lifeless things -- but spreading wings That we may soar aloft, exalting Him. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI LIMITLESS SUPPLY by ALICE TROXWELL MCCOUN |
