NIGHT DRIVE, by HELEN MCGAUGHEY First Line: I ride with music under stars that shine Last Line: And be, myself, a comrade of the dark. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
I ride with music under stars that shine Above a sycamore that branches tall. The evening dew now blooms on flowers of mine. I hear above the air an eerie call, And stop while crickets shrill their melody To a sleepy bird that stirs upon her nest. A rushing train makes known its majesty In bearing down upon a city's rest. White roads like flattened serpents in the night Now beckon me between tall fields of corn. An earthly meteor, I would send my light Swift speeding as a star till early morn, And see the moon go down, an amber arc, And be, myself, a comrade of the dark. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN |
