Yet many were offended in him, And he was sentenced to death ... Barabbas was set free, But Jesus they hung upon a cross, Upon a cross between two thieves ... And they drove nails into his body, And sitting down they watched him there, Until he died ... Mocking him, wagging the head and taunting him. And among them were priests and elders ... Why did they hate him so? These men who were seekers of the good, Devoted to the law, Meditating on it day and night, Guardians of the things of the spirit, Bent on social well-being? In panic and blindness Jesus was slain By men who were afraid ... Yet some said he was a good man, But these were silent then, and they did nothing ... They were busy, preoccupied, indifferent ... Main Street was too busy to care, Too indifferent, So Jesus must be crucified ... And must it always be so? When religion is afraid and patriotism is blind, And people are busy and indifferent, Must Jesus be crucified anew? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY |
