I prize this life, dear Mother, Given me by you. For through you God worked His ancient miracle for me. Cradled beneath your heart, Breath given at price of your pain, Laid in your arms, My first shelter and rest; Fed at your breast, The strength of your body To build my own; This poor self of me In your dreams made great, Transmuted to a being of dignity and worth In your faith and love, With praise always for the work of these hands O, dearest Mother, My father's true help-meet, Vessel of God's mercy to me, How sacred to me Are your toil and your tears, Your hopes and your dreams! I give God thanks this day, And every day for you. My prayer is for you, My song is of you, And no life of worlds or of suns, No life of the starry systems shall outlast My love for you. Accept it as my gift this Mother's Day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY |
