THE THREE, by ALICE MONKS MEARS First Line: The first he loved was so Last Line: Greenly remote, alone. Subject(s): Hearts; Love; Relationships; Single People; Bachelors; Unmarried People | ||||||||
The first he loved was so: she came eating a red apple, scuffed leaves in moccasined feet; watching the wind dapple the lazy gutter's flow, she set out a matchstick fleet. The second had a word like wire and laughter pagan, winey; there was a blue vein of fear that ran along her tiny flame-licked leaf of ear. And her small hand was fire. The third lay in the white sand under water moving, clearly. She was a green stone, of spell and dream, proving strange variable forms of light, greenly remote, alone. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE ODD WOMAN by MADELINE DEFREES THE RIVALS by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON COUNSEIL TO A BACHELER by MARIANNE MOORE MY KIND OF MAN by ANNE WALDMAN THE TWO OLD BACHELORS by EDWARD LEAR THE LAIRD O' COCKPEN by CAROLINA OLIPHANT NAIRNE A CONSISTENT GIRL by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS AGAINST THE MISER MIND by ALICE MONKS MEARS |
