INVOCATION, by MILDRED ETHEL MEEKER First Line: God, grant me days to live and learn Last Line: Attuned to immortality. Subject(s): Faith; Prayer; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
God, grant me days to live and learn, To ponder all the powers that be, To pore among a thousand books And feel their truths arise in me And flood my soul with glory Like the swelling of a tide, Until the merest words of me Reflect the light inside. God, grant me hours to dream away In some remote and cloistered nook, To lie upon the grass and hear The rhythmic tinkle of a brook And gaze upon the wonders there Till beauty blasts my greedy sight, To know again the poignant joy That broods above a summer night. God, grant me weeks and months and years To make my life a noble thing, Resplendent with the harmony That love and pain and laughter bring, To prove me brave and strong and true When I must joust adversity, To keep within a steadfast heart Attuned to immortality. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY JUNIUS BRUTUS BOOTH by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
