I heard the bells on Christmas Day,
Calling to worship and to pray.
The chimes rang out on the still air,
And Christmas carols chanted there.
Weary and lonely, bitter from wrong,
My heart was cold to the joy and song.

I heard a Voice on Christmas Day,
Calling to me across the way;
As Christ stilled the turbulent sea,
Calmed was the wayward heart of me.
The melody of His words sublime,
Echoed long after the vesper chime.

Humbly I took my gifts to lay,
Upon His altar, Christmas Day;
My soul penitent of its sin,
My heart of love, good will therein.
The bells died away on the still air,
God gave me peace as I knelt in prayer.
