LANDSMAN'S DREAM, by CHAPMAN JAMES MILLING Poet's Biography First Line: A strip of earth, a patch of sky Last Line: And in my heart a sail? | ||||||||
A strip of earth, a patch of sky, The glory of the sea, A myrtle thicket on the dune, A lone palmetto tree; Beyond the bar a passing sail That travels silently. I dwell where blushing maples burn Beyond the crystal gale; My only gulls are whip-poor-wills, A rock my only whale. Why then are myrtles in my soul, And in my heart a sail? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CROATAN by CHAPMAN JAMES MILLING SONNET IN A CEMETERY by CHAPMAN JAMES MILLING VARIATIONS: 16 by CONRAD AIKEN FALSE FRIENDS-LIKE by WILLIAM BARNES TO A WATERFOWL by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT IN MEMORIAM A.H.H.: 23 by ALFRED TENNYSON PLAYING IT SAFE by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS |
