LONE Gabael of Sichem, blind from birth, Mused through the twilight's tang of flowers and earth, But with his stony eyes saw not the shine Of mountains in the sun's incarnadine. Yet seeing not the light, the light he heard. . . . Jesus drew nigh, and o'er men's shouts one word Bade him to see. He felt a touch -- no more. Voiceless and pale beside the grasses hoar The beggar, unbeheld, then swiftly turned In silence, and for him all beauty burned, For eye to eye he gazed upon God's face. And, knowing nought of sapphire fields in space, Nor of the woods and brooks, nor of the light, In Jesus he consumed his newborn sight, And with his aged eyes, still virginal Unto the day, looked through his spirit's thrall. His sight leapt forward, fain to follow where His Master led him; but the heightening blare O'erwhelmed him when the concourse knew he saw. Jesus, beneath the palms, passed on in awe And Gabael, that he might only see Christ's countenance in crystal purity, Raising his wrinkled hands, put out his eyes. Silent, the sunset tinged with blood the skies. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BLIND POET by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) HE HAD A GOOD YEAR by MARVIN BELL THE BLIND SHEEP by RANDALL JARRELL THE BLIND by EDGAR LEE MASTERS THE BLIND DOG OF VENICE by RON PADGETT BATTLE AFTER WAR by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON BOARDING: 5.
