TO A GRASSHOPPER, by JOHN RICHARD MORELAND First Line: Frail truant, from your pleasant fare Last Line: The cold indifference of stone. Subject(s): Grasshoppers | ||||||||
Frail truant, from your pleasant fare In autumn fields, your green retreat, How came you on the City Square Amid the rush of wheels and feet? From stinging rain of argent days, Your harbor was the friendly tree, And in the burning noonday haze You knew the leaf's cool sanctity. But they are gone, those drowsy hours Fragrant with pleasure newly blown. You have exchanged for friendly flowers The cold indifference of stone. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TEN MILLS: ONE GUESS by ROBERT FROST A SOLILOQUY; OCCASIONED BY THE CHIRPING OF A GRASSHOPPER by WALTER HARTE THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE CRICKET by JAMES HENRY LEIGH HUNT THE GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKET by JOHN KEATS THE GRASSHOPPER; TO MY NOBLE FRIEND MR.
