TWILIGHT, by CLARA WHITTAKER MORRISSEY First Line: From out my casement window low I leant Last Line: "twilight, I love thee." Subject(s): Evening; Sunset; Twilight | ||||||||
From out my casement window low I leant, Wrapped in fond mem'ries of a day's content; I watched night softly folding down, Stars peeping forth, a living crown. Birds their cradle songs were crooning, Blooms in cloying scent were swooning, Waves crisped the sea, a long tryst keeping With shores that even now were sleeping. Peace flowed over me, evening air grew chill, And every beating pulse of life was still; Yet as this lambent beauty drifted by, In ecstasy I breathed a long-drawn sigh, And whispered in the darkness circling me, "Wait, fragrant night, Come not too soon. Pause, waning light, Reflecting yon pale moon -- Give me my little hour -- Twilight, I love thee." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV THE HOUSE OF DUST: 1 by CONRAD AIKEN TWILIGHT COMES by HAYDEN CARRUTH IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON NINETEEN FORTY by NORMAN DUBIE |
