TWILIGHT, by
First Line: From out my casement window low I leant
Last Line: "twilight, I love thee."
Subject(s): Evening; Sunset; Twilight

From out my casement window low I leant,
Wrapped in fond mem'ries of a day's content;
I watched night softly folding down,
Stars peeping forth, a living crown.

Birds their cradle songs were crooning,
Blooms in cloying scent were swooning,
Waves crisped the sea, a long tryst keeping
With shores that even now were sleeping.

Peace flowed over me, evening air grew chill,
And every beating pulse of life was still;
Yet as this lambent beauty drifted by,
In ecstasy I breathed a long-drawn sigh,

And whispered in the darkness circling me,

"Wait, fragrant night,
Come not too soon.
Pause, waning light,
Reflecting yon pale moon --
Give me my little hour --
Twilight, I love thee."
