WHITE STEPS, by MARY MOSES MUNDT First Line: At night old women sit on their white steps Last Line: But now you sitperhaps god meant it so. Alternate Author Name(s): Mundt, Mrs. Karl E. Subject(s): Life; Old Age; Women; Youth | ||||||||
At night old women sit on their white steps, Secure, and watch the stream of Life flow by. A young girl steals from out the dusk. They hunch Their stiffened forms. They wag their heads and sigh. Dull, shapeless splotches on the clean white steps: Forgotten now are all the throbbing notes That once sang Life. Its multi-colored tunes Lie stifled, cold, in tightened, wrinkled throats. Old women, you have washed your steps so clean From all Life's grimy smears. A day ago You, too, were smudged. You tasted good and bad; But now you sitPerhaps God meant it so. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BETWEEN THE WARS by ROBERT HASS THE GOLDEN SHOVEL by TERRANCE HAYES ALONG WITH YOUTH by ERNEST HEMINGWAY THE BLACK RIVIERA by MARK JARMAN |
