ALCHEMY OF PRAYER, by ETTA JOSEPHEAN MURFEY First Line: In vain the alchemists have sought to learn Last Line: The all-transcendent alchemy of prayer. Subject(s): Prayer | ||||||||
In vain the alchemists have sought to learn The nature of a stone that can transmute All baser metals into gold and turn Their atoms' course -- a godly attribute. In ages hence humanity will yearn To find this subtle agent and salute The world as lords of mastodon and fern, Surcharged with power that is absolute. Far more effective than the ancient stone There is an alchemy that never fails To change the baser passions which we share Into the gold of faith, and thus atone For every sin the heart of man bewails: The all-transcendent alchemy of prayer. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN LISTEN, LORD: A PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON A PRAYER FOR THE FUTURE by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRAY by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE PRAYER DURING A TIME MY SON IS HAVING SEIZURES by SHARON OLDS WE WHO PRAYED AND WEPT by WENDELL BERRY PRAYERS AND SAYINGS OF THE MAD FARMER by WENDELL BERRY AFTER THE LAST BREATH (J.H. 1813-1904) by THOMAS HARDY IMITATIONS OF HORACE: ODE IV, 1 by ALEXANDER POPE THE HOUSE OF LIFE: 26.
