PARADOX, by BENJAMIN FRANCIS MUSSER First Line: We are a regiment, whose martial cry Last Line: Your own slain march at our side. Subject(s): Contrariness; Military; Pacifism; Peace; Social Protest; Soldiers; War; Peace Movements | ||||||||
We are a regiment, whose martial cry Is the cry of peace! Above war's puppet dead Our avenging banner trails across the sky, Till the sky itself streams red. For each bewildered soldier flung to your foe, For every godlike man you force to a gun, A comrade joins our army, to overthrow Your war till our war be won. Trampling your law that kills, our steady tread Is matched by a ghostly echo: keeping our stride, A brother walks with each from your enemy's dead, Your own slain march at our side. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE DISTANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV THE PACIFIST; EPIGRAM by HILAIRE BELLOC PLANKED WHITEFISH by CARL SANDBURG TO A PACIFIST FRIEND by GEORGE SANTAYANA BREAKING COVER by ELAINE TERRANOVA TO A CERTAIN VERY UGLY BUILDING: THE ARMORY by VINCENT GODFREY BURNS THE OLD MEN AND THE YOUNG MEN by WITTER BYNNER THE LAMENT OF THE VOICELESS by LAURA BELL EVERETT BEACON (FOR A SEASIDE SHEPHERD OF SOULS) by BENJAMIN FRANCIS MUSSER |
