I God of our fathers, see the strife The agony of men, the shame The hearts that struggle on for life The trembling lips that plead Thy name: Do Thou remember all and yet, Let me forgetlet me forget! II For others we have held the cross, With strength we scarce could spare, And labored on for gain or loss Not knowing which, just taking care: Dear God, remember this, and yet, Let me forgetlet me forget! III A burden rests upon the heart: And loyal ones know most of care; Injustice, friend from friend must part; That Gulf of DivesOh, beware Lest God Himself forsake thee there! And yet, and yetlet me forget! IV Lord God of Hosts, let me forget The swordthe nailsthe cup denied! Let me behold the vision set Before my face, Love Sanctified! The vision Dante saw, divine So shall his dream of love be mine! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AT LAKE DESOLATION by KENNETH REXROTH ELEGY: THE LITTLE GHOST WHO DIED FOR LOVE; FOR ALLANAH HARPER by EDITH SITWELL SUMMER NIGHT-BROADWAY by LOUIS UNTERMEYER A SHROPSHIRE LAD: 48 by ALFRED EDWARD HOUSMAN ABRAHAM LINCOLN WALKS AT MIDNIGHT by NICHOLAS VACHEL LINDSAY SONNET: 66 by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE A HUN by VINCENT GODFREY BURNS RED FLAG by EDWARD RALPH CHEYNEY THE DAY OF THE DEAD SOLDIERS; MARY 30, 1869 by EMMA LAZARUS |
