TROPISM, by KATHLEEN O'TOOLE First Line: Last night / the rain jewelled the window-pane Last Line: In the dead electric globe. Subject(s): Rain | ||||||||
Last night The rain jewelled the window-pane To crystalled hematite. You spoke and I could not listen; Beyond your white face I saw the raindrops glitter And point the black pane with staccato light. And when the rain ceased, the moon Paled the midnight to profusion. When I awoke to the tasselled morning, It was borne in upon me That day changes nothing. Day changes nothing, for today, Gliding the strong leaves of the tree, The sunlight falls like heavy powder -- No louder than powder. No. But louder than your voice, Blurred within my ears To a dull, senseless noise. This only do I know: I am a sprawling wheel without a hub. If I should raise my eyes, strained and expectant, To you, once such a source of light, There would be, innocuously reflected, Only the window's pale face glimmering In the dead electric globe. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...DISTANT RAINFALL by ROBINSON JEFFERS CHAMBER MUSIC: 32 by JAMES JOYCE HEAVY SUMMER RAIN by JANE KENYON CROWD CORRALLING by MARGARET AVISON THE RAIN-POOL by KARLE WILSON BAKER ON THE GREAT ATLANTIC RAINWAY by KENNETH KOCH THE VIRTUOSO; IN IMITATION OF SPENCER'S STYLE AND STANZA by MARK AKENSIDE |
