THE AGNOSTIC'S PRAYER, by DEMPS ALEXANDER ODEN First Line: Awed by thy firmament above / confused by Last Line: Wondering, trusting, unafraid. Subject(s): Agnosticism; Religion; Worship; Theology | ||||||||
Awed by Thy firmament above; Confused by mysteries here below; I can but trust my Father's love, My humble creed: "I do not know." The preacher unto Thee ascribes But attributes of superman. Interpreters to Earthly tribes, Should not presume our God to scan! If Christ be God, as myriads claim; Unproven though it seem to me; I still do rev'rence to His Name, I worship Him in praising Thee. The Power that placed the mighty suns, Created Earth of land and sea, Hath marked the path where my life runs, And at its end will care for me. Then, when Thy summons comes for me, And o'er me creeps Death's chilling shade, Oh! Let me go full willingly; Wondering, trusting, unafraid. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY GRAND ARMY PLAZA by KAREN SWENSON THE WHITE WOMEN by MARY ELIZABETH COLERIDGE ON MY JOYFUL DEPARTURE FROM THE CITY OF COLOGNE by SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE |
