The Autumn wind in a gust of joy Swept through my tranquil dreams; Trees from their slumbering swayed and traced A pattern of silver filigree gleams Upon my wall and in swift delight The oak leaves danced in glee, Rustling and singing a lilting song; "The Lady of Death is setting us free." Then louder longer the wind laughed out And wildly gay leaves whirled; "Lady of Death, sweet Lady of Death, We see in your eyes the rim of the world." They tapped and danced on my window sill; Some gaily flew to me, Drifting to rest on my counterpane To whisper and sigh, "Ah, now we are free." Today the leaves like a carpet lie All yellow, brown and curled, Crackling and chuckling beneath my tread, "The Lady of Death is Queen of the World!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
