MIGRATION, by GEORGE W. PEACE First Line: Its watchful eye observes the passing time Last Line: But when we ask, we find the bird has flown. Subject(s): Birds; Migration | ||||||||
Its watchful eye observes the passing time And sees the frost line, in its downward climb, Reach out and paint the colors on the leaves And blow its hoary breath upon the eaves. It needs no other warning, but must go Beyond the icy clutches of the snow; So in the starry darkness of the night The swallow spreads its wings in southern flight. And there until the balmy grace of spring Has once again reclaimed the barren land, It shows a wisdom none can understand. We reason why a little feathered thing Should learn the secrets men have never known, But when we ask, we find the bird has flown. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...27,000 MILES by ALBERT GOLDBARTH THE GREAT MIGRATION by MINNIE BRUCE PRATT TO A WATERFOWL by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS MIGRATION by PINKIE GORDON LANE |
