Woman of sorrow and shame,
I need your hands on my brow,
You have learned to drink my lips' flame
As your body with rest you endow.

What did they tell us, there below?
Light poured in a stream—
The usual festive glow.
But our soft dream

Alone, was the lamp's gleam, mild
Goddess that in the gloom embalms
Your slender body, fresh and wild,
With its royal alms;

Was the darkness of the square
Where the window must be,
And the sorrow brooding there
Tonight ... for me.
