ABSENCE, by MARIAM PEMBERTON First Line: The chimes from the gray stone church Last Line: Your presence came the hour to share. Subject(s): Absence; Separation; Isolation | ||||||||
The chimes from the gray stone church Proclaimed the Sabbath morning; Inside was a reverent, wordless peace; The sun sprayed golden rays Across the organ pipes, Infusing a warm light into stained panes. Tender, throbbing music filled the chapel; Into the stillness came a pause, a prayer. It would have been complete Had you been there. Your chair was empty, Yet I saw your face etched With beauty's own consecration; I heard your voice praising God and His infinite love -- Though you were not there, Your presence came the hour to share. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EVENING OF THE MIND by DONALD JUSTICE CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME by JANE KENYON THE PROBLEM by CHARLOTTE FISKE BATES WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN by DAVID LEHMAN THIS UNMENTIONABLE FEELING by DAVID LEHMAN |
