WINTER, by ESTELLE HALE PERRY First Line: The fields were brown and sear Last Line: I had seen god's signature. Subject(s): Nature; Winter | ||||||||
The fields were brown and sear The branches bare and drear The sun shone dimly Then seemed to disappear. Winter with a master's stroke this day Etched every precious tree and shrub with feathery spray Turned every blade of grass into a dancing gnome, Then placed a lace mantilla on the roof of every home, And in the easy wind, they nestled snug within their ermine lane While white carillons hung from each tiny window pane. Then suddenly in the southern sky A touch of color seemed to lie, Shades of powder-blue, more beautiful than I can tell Came on the canvas and spread into the bay and fell There, prone to call the picture done. It was then in the hushed silence as it hung, that I was sure I had seen God's signature. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOOKING EAST IN THE WINTER by JOHN HOLLANDER WINTER DISTANCES by FANNY HOWE WINTER FORECAST by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN AT WINTER'S EDGE by JUDY JORDAN |
