AFTER RAIN, by ANYA PETRUNKEVITCH First Line: How good to see once thirsty soil replete Last Line: The hope of harvest plenty ... Work well done. Subject(s): Rain; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
How good to see once thirsty soil replete And strengthened by the recreating rain; The withered grass stand tall and straight again, No longer twisted by destroying heat. To smell the rain-splashed earth, as pungent, sweet And heady as a glass of old champagne. How good to hear, when storm is past, refrain Of joyous birds; and hear the rhythmic beat Of moisture dripping from each freshened leaf. How good to see the sky once more appear Between dispersing clouds. To feel the sun ... But better still, this respite, even brief Although it be, from burning drouth, brings near The hope of harvest plenty ... work well done. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI THE FAMILY by KATHERINE MANSFIELD |
