FAREWELL, King Football! 'Tis with keen regret We see you take your armor and depart For gallantly in this tempestuous year, You held your sway and played your royal part! You gave us, this year, lots of extra thrills, And, it is said, much smaller doctor bills! You leave affairs in rather tangled state All twisted like an angleworm with cramps It's hard to say just who could wallop which, Or nominate an actual set of champs. But we should worrywe saw lots of bumps, Good right-hand punches, and some lovely thumps! The halfback now sits down to study Greek, The center does his best with Latin prose; The quarterback appears at lectures now, And looks quite well, despite his battered nose. The tumult and the shouting of the fray Die as King Football goes upon his way! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FOR THE DEATH OF VINCE LOMBARDI by JAMES DICKEY AFTER THE LAST PRACTICE; GRINNELL, IOWA, NOVEMBER 1941 by EDWARD HIRSCH SAY GOODBYE TO BIG DADDY by RANDALL JARRELL AUTUMN BEGINS IN MARTINS FERRY, OHIO by JAMES WRIGHT THE GLORIOUS TOUCHDOWN by GEORGE ADE THE LINE MEN by WILLIAM ROSE BENET FIGHT!
