GIVE ME A GIRL, by WILLIAM A. PHELON First Line: Give me a girl who understands the game Last Line: "give me a girlwho understands the game!" Subject(s): Baseball; Ignorance; Sports; Women; Dullness; Stupdity | ||||||||
GIVE me a girl who understands the game, And knows just when to cheer a rattling play And, better, knows just when to shut her lips, Nor ask fool questions in a foolish way. The law won't let you slay the girl who asks The reason why the umpire does not bat Or why the pitcher, out there on the hill, Wears an old cap and not a stylish hat The law won't let you in pure vengeance choke The girl who, when the practicing is done, Arises, starts to leave the scene, and says: "Wasn't it wonderful? And which side won?" You have to grin and bear it, though you know That life in future won't be quite the same That's why I say, with bitterness of heart, "Give me a girlwho understands the game!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BUFFALO CLOUDS OVER THE MAESTRO HOON by NORMAN DUBIE SIMPLE PHILO OF ALEXANDRIA by NORMAN DUBIE I'M WITH STUPID by PETER JOHNSON ELECTION DAY, 1984 by CAROLYN KIZER AN AMERICAN IN BANGKOK by KAREN SWENSON FESTOONS OF FISHES by ALFRED FRANCIS KREYMBORG TO A BLOCKHEAD by ALEXANDER POPE THE CASE OF SABRINA SIMPSON USCH by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS A BIT OF MULL by FREDERICK HENRY HERBERT ADLER A FOOL THERE WAS by WILLIAM A.
