(Death is something no one yearns to meetbut isn't it great, when the time comes, to go out as Jake Daubert did, with whole cities mourning for him and never an enemy on the earth?) NO FINER player ever flashed the spikes, No better athlete ever played the game, Andsuch the tribute of the baseball world No player ever had a cleaner name. He gave The Game all that he hadhis best From eager boyhood into middle age, And the proud records of his life and deeds In baseball annals fill a glorious page! Truest of sportsmen, on the field and off, He starred and sparkled till relentless Fate, The Master of the Umpires, raised his hand And waved him outward through the Unknown Gate! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND A FOOL THERE WAS by WILLIAM A.
