THE COLLEGE CHEER, by WILLIAM A. PHELON First Line: The football heroes are but shapes that go Last Line: To tell how the college spirit never dies! Subject(s): College Sports; Football; Sports; Universities & Colleges | ||||||||
THE football heroes are but shapes that go Like the quick pictures in the movie show They come, they sparkle, and they disappear They linger with us some three years or so. And still on every gridiron field, we hear The ringing chorus of the college cheer The selfsame call that thrilled our father's souls The thunderous war cry, lasting, year by year! Each great eleven wins its passing fame, Then fades away, and soon is but a name The college cheer outlives them, one and all The old, old cheer, that still remains the same! There on the sod before enraptured eyes, They strive; they win, or lose, the battle-prize And thennew teams, new throngsand that old cheer, To tell how the college spirit never dies! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CAMPUS SONNET: MAY MORNING by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET CAMPUS SONNET: RETURN - 1917 by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET CAMPUS SONNET: TALK by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET ODE FOR SCHOOL CONVOCATION by JOHN CIARDI A PHOTO OF A LOVER FROM MY JUNIOR YEAR IN COLLEGE by ALBERT GOLDBARTH KENT STATE, MAY 1970 by JOHN HAINES TO A VISITING POET IN A COLLEGE DORMITORY by CAROLYN KIZER BACCALAUREATE by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH A FOOL THERE WAS by WILLIAM A.
